A close-reading workshop on responsibility
Read the prescribed poem alongside this guide. Its title makes an assertion about the limits of concern, but the poem asks readers to test that assertion. The central analytical distinction is between what the speaker says to justify himself and what the work as a whole leads readers to judge. A poem can criticise an attitude by allowing a voice to display it. Do not confuse the speaker's self-defence with the poet's advice to the audience.
Establish voice before judging it
Identify what the speaker regards as sufficient reason for concern. Then ask what that standard excludes. The question is ethical as well as narrative: another person's danger can be acknowledged yet treated as irrelevant to personal comfort. A useful answer explains how the language exposes that calculation. Simply calling the speaker selfish is a starting judgment, not an analysis. Show the verbal habit, image or repeated reasoning that allows the reader to reach the judgment.
Osundare's own website situates his socially engaged poetry in to military repression. That context can clarify why public silence matters, but it does not remove the need to read the poem's particular method. Avoid identifying every unnamed agent with a named historical official. A generalised threat can give the poem a reach beyond a single documented incident. Separate verified authorial context from the specific scene that the literary work constructs.
Turn repetition into an argument
A refrain is a recurring verbal unit. Its effect depends on what happens between its returns. Read the repeated passage once, then reread it after each intervening episode. Ask whether the wording stays stable while the reader's judgment becomes more severe. Repetition can reveal a habit of thought: the speaker repeatedly returns to the same protective explanation instead of allowing new evidence to change his position. This is more precise than saying that repetition makes the poem memorable.
The relationship between pattern and interruption is equally important. Mark the last occurrence of the familiar justification in your copy and compare it with the ending. If an expected return does not occur, its absence can become meaningful. Do not describe the final section as merely another interchangeable example. Ask how the speaker's position in relation to danger has changed. Structure can expose the failure of a belief without adding a separate moralising explanation.
Read everyday comfort as part of a social argument
A domestic or bodily detail can do more than make a scene realistic. It can define the scale on which a speaker measures his obligations. Consider how an ordinary pleasure might represent the wish to keep public events outside private life. Do not claim that the object itself is morally wrong. The analytical issue is the use made of it within the speaker's reasoning. A symbol's function emerges from the surrounding actions and recurring choices, not from a dictionary of fixed meanings.

Compare concrete physical actions with abstract excuses. Direct verbs can make another person's suffering difficult to dismiss, while a repeated self-focused response attempts to reduce its significance. A paragraph can develop that opposition without recounting every event. Select one instance, explain its and then connect it to the repeated verbal pattern. This keeps the argument focused on the poem's method rather than turning the answer into a chronological retelling.
Distinguish from simple surprise
involves a gap between a position presented and a meaning readers are invited to recognise. A surprising ending is not automatically ironic. Here a useful question is whether the structure tests the very assumption on which the speaker's self-protection depends. If the supposed boundary between others and oneself proves unstable, the ending does more than introduce new information. It makes the earlier reasoning visible as a mistake. Explain that relation instead of using as a decorative label.
Do not turn the work into a guarantee that every indifferent person will experience an identical fate. Literary consequence is not a statistical law. An ethical reading can argue that collective vulnerability undermines the fantasy of total private insulation. That proposition must be defended through the poem's organisation. It is stronger than an unsupported slogan because it explains how the work makes one attitude difficult to sustain.
Sound and narrative pace
Read the episodes for changes in time markers, action and pause. A compressed account can make coercion feel abrupt, while a repeated response creates an unnerving regularity. The combination can present exceptional harm as something the speaker has made routine. If you discuss a silence, distinguish literal lack of speech from a refusal to respond responsibly. Both can matter, but they are not interchangeable. Identify the precise silence your evidence supports.
Likewise, a collective or indefinite agent can imply whose members are not individually visible. Analyse the grammatical effect before inventing identities. Who acts, who receives an action and who claims to stand outside it? This simple set of questions often produces a clearer paragraph than a long list of political terminology. Historical context should sharpen those relations, not replace them with a summary of an era.
Write a sustained examination response
For a question about indifference, organise the answer around exposure rather than a list of separate themes. First explain the speaker's standard of concern; next examine how the refrain turns it into a habit; finally show how the ending tests it. Choose checked references from different stages. A conclusion should answer what the structure leads readers to understand about responsibility. It should not merely repeat that the poem is political.
Self-check: why can the title be read as a position under examination rather than the poet's advice? Because speaker and whole-work judgment need not agree. What makes a refrain structurally important? Its relation to intervening events and to any interruption of the pattern. What distinguishes an analytical paragraph from retelling? It explains how selected language creates meaning. Write one paragraph on the gap between personal safety and shared vulnerability, then remove any sentence that names a real perpetrator without evidence from the text or a verified primary source.
