A balanced trial balance can still contain errors
A trial balance tests equality of debit and credit balances, not the truth of every transaction. Complete omission leaves both sides absent. An error of principle posts an item to an inappropriate class, such as treating equipment as a routine expense, while preserving equal amounts. An error of commission can use the wrong personal account on the correct side. An error of original entry records the same incorrect amount in both sides. Complete reversal swaps the debit and credit accounts. These errors can preserve trial-balance agreement and still misstate important information.
Other errors disturb equality. Posting only one side, using different amounts on the two sides, misadding an account or carrying a balance to the wrong column can produce a difference. The difference's size offers clues, but does not establish the cause. A difference divisible by nine may suggest a transposition or slide, yet evidence is still required. Two errors may offset each other. The correct investigation traces documents and postings instead of inventing an adjustment merely because it makes the totals equal.
Correct what happened, not what was intended
First write the entry that should have been made. Then identify the entry actually made. The correcting entry removes the wrong effect and introduces the missing correct effect. If equipment costing₦30,000 was debited to Repairs and credited to Bank, Bank is already correct. Debit Equipment and credit Repairs₦30,000. Crediting Bank again would duplicate the payment. A clear explanation of the original mistake prevents the common error of reposting the entire transaction rather than correcting only the affected accounts.
For complete reversal, the correction may require twice the amount in the affected accounts. Suppose a cash sale of₦5,000 was wrongly debited to Sales and credited to Cash. To remove the wrong entry and record the correct one, debit Cash₦10,000 and credit Sales₦10,000. Half cancels the error and half records the intended transaction. This double amount follows from the actual postings; it is not a rule for every error. Always show the two stages or explain the net adjustment.
Suspense is a temporary investigation balance
A suspense account can hold a trial-balance difference temporarily while errors are identified. If debit totals exceed credit totals by₦8,000, a credit suspense balance can temporarily equalise the trial balance. The account is not income, capital or an excuse to leave unexplained figures indefinitely. Corrections involving the missing or incorrect side then clear it. Errors that did not affect agreement normally do not require suspense. A question can contain both types, so classify each before posting.

Suppose Rent was correctly debited₦8,000 but the bank credit was omitted. The correction is debit Suspense and credit Bank₦8,000 if that omitted credit is the reason for the existing credit suspense balance. The rent expense must not be debited again. If several errors are present, prepare the suspense account with each correction and check that the final balance is zero once all relevant errors are corrected. A remaining balance signals incomplete investigation or another incorrect assumption, not automatic proof of a particular missing item.
Control accounts summarise personal ledgers
A receivables control account summarises transactions affecting customers'balances, while a payables control account summarises suppliers. They provide a check against the total of individual personal accounts when maintained appropriately. The control account's source should be independent enough to make comparison useful. Copying the same incorrect total into both records will not expose the mistake. Control accounts support efficiency and investigation, but agreement does not prove every customer amount or supporting transaction is valid.
For receivables, an elementary calculation starts with opening debit balances, adds credit sales and relevant charges, and deducts receipts, sales returns, discounts allowed, irrecoverable debts and other reductions under the question's system. For payables, begin with the opening credit balance, add credit purchases and deduct payments, purchase returns and discounts received. Transfers between ledgers, contra settlements and unusual debit or credit balances require separate attention. Read whose books are being prepared and the direction of each transaction before choosing a side.
Reconcile control and personal totals
Suppose the receivables control account shows₦60,000 but the list of personal balances totals₦55,000. Investigation finds a₦5,000 customer invoice correctly included in the day-book total and control account but omitted from that customer's ledger. The personal list must be increased; the control account does not need another debit. If instead a day-book total was undercast while individual invoices were posted correctly, the control account needs correction. The location of the error determines which record changes.
Some problems provide a control-account reconciliation and an adjusted calculation together. An error can affect ledger agreement, and financial position differently. Misclassifying equipment as repairs understates and but can preserve trial-balance equality. Omitting a bank credit can affect the bank and suspense without requiring another expense adjustment. Keep separate workings for control balances, suspense and effects. A correct number in one working should not be copied mechanically into every other statement.
Self-check and examination method
Use a table with columns for the correct entry, actual entry, correction, effect on agreement and effect on where helpful. Such a table is an analysis aid, not a replacement for properly named accounts. Narrations explain the error being corrected. Label whether a figure is a debit or credit and include the reporting date. Do not write that an error of principle has no effect simply because the trial balance still agrees; it can materially affect classification and .
Self-check: a credit sale is completely omitted. The trial balance may agree, but sales and receivables are understated. Self-check: a customer payment is posted to the wrong customer's account, with the bank debit correct. The overall control total can agree while two personal balances are wrong. Correct those accounts rather than altering bank. This method develops the central habit of bookkeeping investigation: follow the evidence and identify the exact record that needs change.
Further application
A control-account check is strongest when the compared records have sufficiently independent sources. If both totals copy the same mistaken spreadsheet cell, agreement adds little assurance. Review the origin of the figures and investigate unusual balances as well as the final equality.
